We have been asked to look after a Barn Owl that was found in outbuildings with half a wing missing. The wound was clean and healing well and, although the bird was very thin, it is now eating well and is in an aviary with the two other amputees.
A Common Buzzard and a Harris’ Hawk have been added to our stock of imprinted birds. These, together with the Red Tail Hawk we have had for some time, are being trained to participate in hawk walks.
On the Owl side, we have hand reared one of our home bed Little Owls. Like all its kind, despite its small size, it has a very big attitude and could best be described as ‘fiesty’. It will be taken on school visits from the middle of this new term.
Mark and Peter are now qualified to teach the LANTRA Awards system of bird of prey care. This is currently a voluntary code designed to ensure that all bird of prey owners have achieved a minimum level of competence and understanding of the bird’s requirements. Many people feel that attainment of this award will eventually become a legal requirement before a bird of prey can be bought. Anyone interested in such a course should contact Mark or Peter on 01670 772698; captive bred birds can be provided for use during training.
