We have been very busy with the building of 10 new aviaries. This gives us much more flexibility with housing the birds as not all the wild injured birds are fit enough to be put in one large aviary. Also, we have acquired some new imprinted birds so we need additional space for them. As these birds are still very young, we have not taken any photographs of them yet; by Autumn’s newsletter we hope to introduce these birds.

Our latest wild resident is another Tawny Owl, again the victim of a car. He was found by a roadside with substantial head damage. We think that he was possibly caught by the car aerial as he has lost an eye. After a lot of time and care given to him by Blyth Wildlife Rescue the bird was brought to us and he is now in his own aviary, eating very well and apparently content. It will not be possible to put him in the large outdoor aviary because his visual impairment would make him a natural target for the other birds in there. The wild Barn Owls on the farm have had a successful breeding season. We have been able to watch the adults teaching their young how to hunt by bringing prey back to the nest, dropping it on the ground and showing their brood how to drop onto the mouse/vole and kill it. We know that the wild Tawny Owls have also bred well because we can hear them, and often see a very large adult female hunting at night, but with the typical Tawny Owl skill at camouflage, we have no idea where the nest is. We shall be at Netherwitton Village Day on 14th June between 2 – 4pm. and at Dyslexia Family Fun Day at Stannington Village Hall on 20th June between 2 – 4pm.; so we hope to meet some of you there.
